Vehicle Recovery Winch Safety Protocols for Jeeps, Trucks, and SUVs

Vehicle recovery winches are used to create tension in a cable or rope wire that is tough enough to move large objects or vehicles such as Jeeps, trucks, ATVs, and even SUVs! Of course, applying such a large amount of force and tension can result in potentially hazardous situations. The winch cable can easily snap, causing a catastrophe.

There are many aspects of winches to consider before making a purchase. Things to consider regarding winches are their accessories, mounting systems, and safety protocols. Explained below will be useful information for the beginner and expert wincher. Please pay careful attention, especially to the safety section as this is often over looked. Winches are not safe when used in the wrong hands, so educating yourself can be a real lifesaver.

Winch 101 - Winches are powered by a motor that runs off either your vehicle's battery or other electrical power sources. The vehicle's battery power is transferred through the winch's motor to the gear train (or drivetrain), causing the winch drum to rotate the rope or cable in a rapid spinning motion. That is how winches work in a nutshell.

Winch Accessories – There are many winching accessories available to make recovering your vehicle a safer and easier operation, such as: wireless remote controls, D-rings or D-shackles, snatch blocks, tree savers, recovery straps, and vehicle tow hooks. These truck winch accessories are important depending on what you use your winch for.

Mounting Systems – If you decide to equip your vehicle with a winch you will also have to decide what kind of mounting system to employ. There are many options available such as heavy-duty winch mounting bumpers, receiver mounted systems, hidden mounted systems, and multi-mount systems. Each has its benefits, depending upon you and your vehicles requirements.

Winching Safety – There are many safety protocols to consider when purchasing and operating a winch. Here are a few of them:

  • Winch manufacturers recommend that the winch’s line pull capacity be at least one and one-half times greater than the vehicle's curb weight.
  • Never use a frayed or damaged winch cable.
  • Always wear gloves when operating a winch or winching accessories.
  • Always stand twice the distance of the cable length away in case of cable failure.
  • Always weigh down the winch cable during winching operations in case of cable failure.

There are winching operation manuals and even classes available on safely using a winch for vehicle recovery.

If the proper steps and guidelines discussed above are implemented every time you use a winch, then you should be in good hands. It is when you get careless that the safety level significantly drops.
